Lucy died in April 2002, and we all miss her terribly. No matter how busy we keep ourselves, the hole is still there.
I haven't had the heart to redo her pages in the past tense.

Children's fiction about pets:

*** new dog park book coming out in October! ***
cover picAt the Dog Park with Sam and Lucy, by Daisy Bix; illustrated by Amelia Hansen.
A book for kids of all ages about dogs named Sam and Lucy who play at a dog park. End of the book has information for grownups about dog parks.
cover picCircle Dogs, by Kevin Henkes; illustrated by Dan Yaccarino. A cute, silly bedtime story about a family with two parents, two children, and two Dachshunds. The dogs eat and play, and then they sleep-sleep-sleep. For babies and young children.
cover of book Counting Kisses : A Kiss & Read Book, by Karen Katz. Board book for even the tiniest ones, but can be appreciated by most younger kids. The whole family, including pets, counts from ten kisses down to one as they put the baby to bed with kisses on named body parts. Sweet and gentle, but not saccharine.
Our children have stopped tantrums to have this book read to them.
Grover's New Kitten, by Sesame Street, photographed by John E. Barrett. Board book for wee ones to preschoolers. Grover adopts a kitten. Out of print.
cover of book Olive, the Other Reindeer, by Vivian Walsh (Illustrator), J. Otto Seibold (Illustrator). Olive is a dog who thinks she's a reindeer after (mis-)hearing the song "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." She goes to the North Pole to join up with Santa; her dog talents come in handy. Toddlers through mid-elementary school.
cover of bookCurious George and the Puppies, by Margret Rey and H.A. Rey. Curious George visits the animal shelter, wants to get a puppy, wants to hold a puppy, lets the puppies loose. Available in paperback or hardcover, October 1998. Young children - early elementary school.
cover pic Ginger Finds a Home, by Charlotte Voake. A scrawny, sad cat lives in a vacant lot and eats out of the garbage. He's hungry and cold much of the time. One day, a little girl starts to leave yummy cat food out for him. He gradually warms up to her and comes to live with her - and returns only to the grass to stretch in the sun.

Seems very sad at first and may provoke tears (did with our 3-year-old), but if you let your little one(s) know ahead of time that it's a *very* happy ending, they are beaming by the time the book closes. Young children - early elementary school.

cover pic Any Kind of Dog, by Amy Cohn (Editor), Lynn W. Reiser. A boy named Richard really wants a dog, but his mom tries to satisfy him with other (sometimes exotic) animals. He eventually does get a dog. Kindergarten through mid-elementary school. Watercolor illustrations.
cover picPuppy Love (The Pet Patrol, No 1), by Betsy Duffey, Susanna Natti (Illustrator). First of a series; light reading. Evie and Megan try to start a pet-care business. The Booford Summer, by Susan Mathias Smith, Andrew Glass (Illustrator). A ten-year-old animal-loving girl feels bad for Booford, the dog that just moved in across the street. His grumpy owner neglects him, leaving him chained outside, and Booford is obviously unhappy and lonely. The girl asks to walk Booford and is - to her surprise - allowed to; in caring for the dog, she not only improves the his life, but thaws out his owner as well. Hardcover, 130 pages, September 1994.
